langhorne slim megapost

god langhorne slim is so fucking awesome.

"Langhorne Slim is a young folk singer, born Sean Scolnick on August 20, 1980, based out of Brooklyn, New York. Originally hailing from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, part of the SUNY system.

He began to gain public notice through several years of touring with the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and an appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. His song Electric Love Letter was recently number 5 on the Rolling Stone editor's top ten picks. The song was also in the movie Waitress. He has recently been seen on tours with Cake, The Avett Brothers, Murder By Death, Jeffrey Lewis, The Violent Femmes, Lucero, and Rocky Votolato.
" - wikipedia, because i hate writing biographies

anyway, he's fuckin sweet. while wikipedia calls him a "folk singer", i'd say he's a bit more complicated. he's more like a country-bluegrass-folk hybrid, with flashes of the good ol' blues and even some slight indie pop elements on very small occasions. the influence of the old timer's music is very, very obvious here, but it doesn't go without his modern alt-country twist. his voice is pretty unique, like if bob dylan was a mouse (that sounded bad.. but trust me, he sounds awesome). also, he plays banjo in the style of pete seeger on many of the tracks which i am a complete sucker for. oh yeah, i almost forgot the stand-up bass. fuckin sweeeeeeet.

what i've uploaded here is everything i have, which to my knowledge is everything he's released. his first album, the independently released slim picken's (2004) was recorded in his friend's apartments, and therefore has a much more raw sound, overall. this record also has more straight-forward blues and old time country elements, there's even some static to the point where it sounds like it was recorded in the 1930's. but that doesn't speak for all of the tracks. my favourite slim song of all time, "feather bed", is on this record, which, as you can hear, is in decent audio quality. then, in 2005, when the sun's gone down was released on narnack records, and therefore has a much more clean-cut sound, and a bit more poppy and modern folky (blasted record companies). here, he becomes more of an avett brothers (except better), while before, on slim picken's, he was the spastic child of bill monroe. you decide which one you'd prefer, though i love them both. eventually, once him and his band (the war eagles) get signed to another record label, they should be giving us all another record to enjoy, which is fucking sweet. apparently, the new album is coming out on april 29th of this year. fuck yes. so start digging him now, because, in slim's words, they're going to become "the biggest thing ever... to come out of langhorne, pennsylvania".

here's an interesting interview with him including some sexy pictures that i would've posted here if they didn't have quotes on them.
